What South Philly organization should get $500 from us?

moneySometimes, gambling pays off.

Developer Bart Blatstein acknowledged at a meeting in Hawthorne last week that he’d tried but ultimately failed to lure Wegman’s to his proposed 30 story, two-tower, 450,000 square foot project at Broad and Washington.

That means we’ve won a friendly $500 wager with HughE Dillon of PhillyChitChat, and one lucky South Philly organization will reap the rewards. You just have to tell us which one should get the money.

Mighty Writers planning to open an after-school program in Italian Market

Mighty Writers, the nonprofit organization that teaches kids the value of writing well, has been awarded a grant that will enable it to open a location in the Italian Market serving Latino students.

A $75,000 grant from the Knight Foundation will help pay for a literacy program catering to at least 150 Latino students from second to 12th grades in its first year. The exact location of the program has not been finalized, but a spokeswoman said they are shooting for 9th Street in or very near the Italian Market, which has become much more Mexican over the years, particularly the southern end.

School Talk: Help Jackson Elementary build this new rooftop playground; fundraiser on Thursday

While the news from the school district continues to be grim, we in Passyunk Square continue to nurture and support our neighborhood schools because we know that great schools equal great neighborhoods.

On Thursday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Wharton Lofts (1148 Wharton St.), the PSCA is supporting the exciting improvement at Jackson Elementary by sponsoring a cocktail party, hosted by Alterra Property Group. The newly formed Friends of Jackson group has joined forces with the PSCA and Alterra for an event that promises to help build a much-needed playground for Jackson students.

They are aiming to raise $65,000 to build the playground.

Reminder: Spring Clean tomorrow, April 5, at sites across the city

In case you forgot, we’re going to remind you.

The Philadelphia More Beautiful Committee (PMBC) has designated tomorrow, April 5, to kick-off its annual Philadelphia-wide spring cleaning effort. And as you can see from this map, there are dozens of places where you can volunteer to scrub the grime left by this historically shitty winter.

Projects generally go from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., but if you can’t make it to an organized effort, just take a few minutes to sweep up in front of your house. That flattened milk jug that’s been on next to your stoop since January ain’t gonna pick itself up.

A range of types of artwork — including sculpture, jewelry, glass, painting, prints, drawing, photography, fiber art and more – will be available, as well as a variety of price points. Some opening bids are as low as $20.

You can still get advance tickets for $10 on this website (click here) until noon Friday, or it’s $15 at the door. Entry also gets you free hors d’oeuvres and wine and beer from sponsors Bitar’s, Cosmi’s, Noord, Tiffin Bistro, Acme, Luxe Vintages and Origlio Beverage.

Hawthorne’s, the 11th Street beer takeout/restaurant that was severely damaged in a fire a few weeks ago, is doing its best to get back on its feet. And you can help make that happen.

The restaurant is holding a block-party fundraiser on Sunday, March 23 at the Bella Vista Beer Distributor across the street (both businesses are owned by the same family).

They are offering an unlimited beer cup for $20, plus a raffle, bake sale and live music. It goes from 1 to 6 p.m. on the 700 block of South 11th Street, between Fitzwater and Catharine.
