Quick Hits: 3rd and Reed development to be ‘clipped’; South St. vandals caught; church to apartments

  • The Constitution Court development that is replacing the demolished St. John’s Episcopal at 3rd and Reed was slapped with a stop-work order because it was taller. And now the developer plans to lift the current structures and slice a couple feet from the bottom, rather than tear down and rebuild, Plan Philly says. Remember guys, measure twice, cut once.
  • The guy who cops says smashed the windows at Honey’s Sit N Eat on South Street and several other restaurants has been caught, says the Inky.

South Philly’s Best of Philly winners – and there are plenty of them

best-of-philly-2013Once again, South Philly represented a disproportionate share of Best of Philly winners in Philly mag’s August issue, which marked the 40th year the publication has been running this list.

Some winners are not surprises, but they’re honors just the same. Then there are some quirky little winners like the best car wash. Ok.

Laban lauds Honey’s South as a finer diner while knocking Melrose, Broad Street

honeys2

The Inquirer’s Craig Laban gave two bells to Honey’s Sit ‘n Eat’s new location at 21st and South streets, praising it for its inventive takes on homey classics. But he managed to stick it to two South Philly diners in the meantime, lamenting the Broad Street Diner’s offerings, including the coffee, which “tastes like it was steeped through brown paper bags.”

This is no figment of an imaginary Diner Apocalypse. This was my lunch last week at the recently revived Broad Street Diner, the latest half-baked kick in the knees to Philly’s once-proud diner tradition. I didn’t expect much better from Michael Petrogiannis, the Michael’s Diner king who has snapped up our onetime down-home jewels – the Melrose, the Mayfair, and the Country Club – and presided over their dreary declines.

Honey’s Sit N Eat’s new South Street spot holds up to original’s standards

The Northern Liberties cult brunch favorite Honey’s Sit N Eat opened its 21st and South location a couple months back after a loooong delay, but it seems like it was worth the wait.

Although Philly Weekly’s Brian Freedman went in skeptical…

Sequels are rarely as good as the original. Sure, there are exceptions — The Dark Knight, Before Sunset, Justin Timberlake’s post-N’Sync career — but in general, follow-ups tend to fall short.

Honey’s Sit ‘n’ Eat opens South Street location

Grub Street has all the details about Honey’s Sit ‘n’ Eat, the NoLibs staple that has opened its second location at 21st and South.

Nearly two years after to restaurant was announced, they started slinging comfort food this week.

Like its predecessor, the new satellite location espouses a cutesy, urban homesteader vibe, with reclaimed wood, salvaged hardware store signs, and tables fashioned from old bureau drawers.

Expect the same homey with hits like country fried steak and fried green tomatoes plus brunch-style selections every day. But this location has more space and hours will soon be extended to 7 a.m. for breakfast all the way to 10 p.m. for dinner.

Find the full menu on their website here.
