Second District Brewing Co. is coming soon to Newbold

Just over a year ago we shared with you that “large steel vats/barrels inside as well as what looked to be a bar” were spotted at a location in Newbold. What appeared to be the start of some sort of brewpub has finally been confirmed.

Brew pub brewing?

In February, Second District Brewing Co., a collaboration between developer John Longacre and Curt Decker, the owner of Nodding Head, is expected to open at 1939 S. Bancroft St.

Court rules that Point Breeze Pop-Up beer garden was operating legally when shut down in 2015

If you recall, during the summer of 2015, the Point Breeze pop-up garden was a hot-topic situation.

The Department of Licenses and Inspections shut down the garden at 1622 Point Breeze Ave. on multiple occasions. Now over a year later, the Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court has decided that the pop-up was in fact legally operating on the site.

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

Brew pub planned for Newbold? That’d be the second brewery for West Passyunk area

A neighbor tipped us off to some construction activity on the 1900 block of Bancroft Street in Newbold, and he says it looks a whole lot like a brewery is setting up shop in there. That’s two for this part of town we’ve heard about in one month.

He said the property was under construction and he “noticed large steel vats/barrels inside as well as what looked to be a bar.”

Brew pub brewing?

Brew pub brewing?

A search of the PLCB liquor license database doesn’t turn up a liquor license application yet, but the permits pulled on the construction say “1st floor sit-down restaurant, 2nd floor artisan industrial.”

Sounds a lot like a brew pub.

Rumor Mill: Is branch of Nodding Head brewery opening at 17th and Snyder?

No.

A user posing as developer John Longacre posted something on Reddit claiming that the Center City brew pub would be opening a location at the former Venice Plaza theater at 17th and Snyder.

The post drew more than two dozen comments, most from people excited by the prospect. But Longacre himself told us it’s not true.

The troubles are continuing for the Point Breeze pop-up garden.

UPDATE: Point Breeze pop-up garden has been allowed to reopen after shutdown

UPDATE: A judge has ruled that the Point Breeze Popup can reopen, and they’re planning to be back in business on Saturday.

After being shut down earlier this week, the Point Breeze Pop-Up beer garden is back in business.

Immediately after receiving the July 8 cease and desist order the Department of Licenses and Inspections, owner John Longacre filed suit in municipal court, asking for an emergency injunction hearing.

The case went to court on Friday, and Longacre emerged victorious

The days of drinking and enjoying the outdoors at the Point Breeze pop-up garden could be over.
