First Pics: Karina’s reopens just off South Street

We’ve been keeping you up to date on all things Karina’s since they’ve moved out of their former space at 1520 E. Passyunk Ave. (where Bringantessa is opening up shop soon).

While Karina’s was originally going to move down the avenue a bit near the fountain, plans changed. It’s now reopened in the former Hoof + Fin spot just off of South Street at 617 S. 3rd Street.

Formerly owned by Chef Pedro Beltano, Karina’s is now owned by his wife, Rosa Uzcha, who is also the head chef. Those who were keen on the the cuisine on Passyunk Avenue needn’t worry, they’ve kept the Spanish/Italian-fusion menu as is and are looking forward to life near bustling South Street.

Karina’s will move into former Hoof + Fin space off South Street

Just when we thought they’d be moving further south, Karina’s switched it up and is instead going north.

The jewel-box BYOB that is being replaced at 1520 E. Passyunk Ave. by Brigantessa from the Le Virtu crew will be moving to 617 S. 3rd St. A lovely tipster sent us this picture:

Karina’s move to the fountain is off

Karina’s, the quirky little BYO that is moving out of 1520 E. Passyunk Ave. to make way for Brigantessa from the Le Virtu crew, has called off its proposed move to the fountain.

Rumor has it that it is moving to a new location on Ritner Street, but we hear that site has not yet been finalized.

Sign of the future at Karina’s – in the form of a Brigantessa liquor license

The tell-tale orange liquor license application has appeared in the window of Karina’s, providing some evidence of the BYOB’s move into new digs a stone’s throw away at the fountain.

The move will make way for Brigantessa, an effort by the Le Virtu crew that will occupy both floors of the current Karina’s at 1520 E Passyunk Ave.

In case you hadn’t heard, Karina’s will pop back up next to Fond across from the fountain, in what used to be an accordion shop at 1535 S. 11th St.

If you’re pining for a last meal in Karina’s before it closes, make sure to hit it up at Passyunk Restaurant Week, which will be the last service before the new location opens. They’re doing four courses for $35, and you can find all the menus for restaurant week here.

The folks behind the upcoming Brigantessa, which is planned for a summer opening in what is now Karina’s at 1520 E. Passyunk Ave., have already commissioned the handmade wood-burning oven that will be the centerpiece of the restaurant.

The heart of the restaurant will be the centrally located wood-burning oven, a show-stopping piece of equipment that is manufactured to order from Italy and hand-made from volcanic ash. Shipped via month-long boat journey directly from Naples, Chef [and co-owner Joe] Cicala and his team will install the enormous oven through a side window, and the entire restaurant will revolve around it, with trained pizzaioli throwing dough and Chef Cicala himself manning the flames.

Karina’s is moving next door to Fond across from the fountain

Karina’s, the Italian-Spanish BYOB that is being replaced by Le Virtu’s Brigantessa, will be moving into the building next to Fond at the East Passyunk fountain.

The Passyunk Avenue Revitalization Corporation, which owns the building currently housing Karina’s half a block away, made the announcement on their Twitter feed.
