What's Happening in:  Lower Moyamensing 

Will construction ever begin on the Brush Factory? LoMo Civic hosts meeting to voice concerns

It has been over two years now since the Zoning Board of Adjustment approved plans for a development to reuse parts of the former Brush Factory at 12th and Jackson to create 151 apartments. The property has been left dormant, allowing for break-ins and dumping to occur on a regular basis at the site.

On Monday, October 24, the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association hosted a meeting to express concerns over the status of this property, as a way to “let [developer Tony Rufo] know that we’re noticing,” said Todd Schwartz, president of the organization.  When plans first emerged, the community group was optimistic about the project, but after two years and no progress, LoMo Civic and nearby residents want to see something moving forward at the property.

Spring is finally approaching, which means it’s time for the annual house cleaning associated with the season.

Upcoming meeting to discuss future initiatives of Playground for Useful Knowledge, improvement in the ‘South Seven’

The Playground for Useful Knowledge opened at 632 Jackson St. over the summer as a sort of pop-up space on an empty lot that is meant to engage the community through various programs, art and open dialogue.

This new space on Jackson Street is just the start of things to come from the Mural Arts Program’s collaboration with Cohabitation Strategies. At an upcoming Lower Moyamensing Civic Association meeting on Feb. 1, you’ll have a chance to hear about the impact of this “playground” and talk about the future growth of this program and how it could have a bigger impact on the “South Seven.”

PHS recognizes Lukoil gas station community garden in gardening and greening contest

In Lower Moyamensing, the Lukoil gas station at 11th and Snyder has become much more than just a place to stop for gas.

While you can of course still stop by to fuel up, a small community garden space was created on the property to bring greenery to an unexpected place. Now the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society is recognizing this gas station garden as a “garden of distinction” in their gardening and greening contest.
