Pennsport parks hosting family-friendly events on Saturday

UPDATE: The Jefferson Square Park event has been postponed to Saturday, October 11.

Live music, local food options, kids crafts, a potluck dinner and more are happening on Saturday in Pennsport.

UPDATE: Guinn mural at Manton Street Park & Community Garden to be ready by early November

UPDATE: The new mural will be dedicated on Nov. 15 at a ceremony at Manton Street Park and Community Garden from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. There will be refreshments available and guest speakers. Jane Golden, Executive Director of Mural Arts, is tentatively scheduled to speak. Artist David Guinn will also be on hand to present the colorful mural.

The park is located on the northwest corner of 4th and Manton St. in Pennsport/Dickinson Square West.

ORIGINAL STORY: Philadelphia artist David Guinn is installing a colorful mural that will soon overlook Manton Street Park & Community Garden (MSCG) on the edge of Pennsport/Dickinson Square West.

Manton Street Park hosts kids’ block party, Homegrown Music Festival on Saturday

Manton Street Park and Community Garden  will host a family friendly block party and music festival on Saturday, Sept. 13 at the park on 4th and Manton streets.

The Family Funfest portion of the program takes place from 2 to 4 p.m. and feature plenty of food,  make-and-take crafts for the kids and even special visits from South Philly Food Co-Op and the John Heinz Wildlife Refuge, with the latter having an interactive table on site.

What's Happening in:  Pennsport 

Mayor Nutter to cut ribbon for newly refurbished Manton Street community garden

The once-dead park on 4th and Manton streets has been transformed into the Manton Street Community Garden and Park, and there will be a ribbon-cutting ceremony for it on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. with Mayor Nutter and other bigwigs.

The event will also feature a block party with food, stilt-walkers, face painting, crafts and more.

Manton Street Park was originally a pocket park in the 1960s, but over the years it became neglected and filled with debris. Resident Mark Berman, the president of the Manton Street Park and Community Garden, took up the cause in 2011 and fliered the neighborhood to gauge interest in cleaning the park.
