Spotted: Black History

Ask someone to name famous African-American artists from Philly, and you’d hear DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Beanie Sigel, Jill Scott, the Roots, the Stylstics, Meek Mill, Grover Washington Jr., and the Delfonics to name a few.

But long before any of those people stepped on a stage, Marian Anderson dazzled the world with her contralto voice. The hometown hero was born in 1897 in what was most certainly not called Graduate Hospital at the time (it barely is now) and she became the first black singer to perform as a member of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
