Police fatally shoot loose dog on Montrose Street

WARNING: There’s a potentially disturbing picture after the jump.

If you heard a gunshot near 15th and Carpenter early this morning, that was the cops shooting a dog.

A roving pit bull was shot by police around 6:30 this morning on the 1400 block of Montrose Street, between Broad and 15th. A police spokeswoman told NBC10 that the dog had been attacking people and charged at the officers who responded.

But a resident of the block, who posted a picture of the bloody aftermath to his Twitter account, says the dog was lying on the stoop. He said he couldn’t even hear barking before the shots were fired.

  • The Mildred Court development at 8th and Montrose in Bella Vista has finally gotten city approval, says Naked Philly. That means the old 7-up bottling plant and adjacent shed will be coming down to make way for 25 houses that will also front part of Carpenter Street.

Link Love: Pennsport is now school-less; suboxone has no place in LoMo & 25 homes are OK’d

  • A recent confluence of school closings from the Philadelphia school district and the Archdiocese has left Pennsport without an elementary school, reports Newsworks:

“We currently have no elementary educational options within the boundaries of our community. No Catholic, no private, no public, no charter,” said [Pennsport Civic Association President James] Moylan.

Kids from Vare (above, at Moyamensing and Morris) will now go to Washington at 5th and Federal, just outside Pennsport’s borders

SoPhilly Spotlight: The 3,500 square feet edition

This should be interesting: 730 Montrose St. #E costs $1.2 million, but it’s HUGE – the biggest house to be featured on SoPhilly Spotlight.

We don’t care for the Beige! Beige! Beige! everywhere, but it’s certainly luxurious and grand. And if you have that kind of money, we’re sure you will just spend another million to redecorate as you see fit.

The building was once a convent, and you may remember another, smaller part of it from a certain October blog post.

Montrose houses replacing Fante Leon pool nearly done

A new three-house development at Montrose and Darien streets is nearly complete just steps off the Italian Market in Bella Vista.

The permits filed with the city say each house will have decks above and parking below, so expect these places to be in demand. Just not from historic preservationists, who griped that the development should have incorporated the building’s facade into any new development.

She was a grand old pool, wasn’t she?
But much less grand in modern times, from Naked Philly

Shot Tower Coffee owner opens DIG Yoga in Bella Vista

Mariel Freeman, one half of the team that opened Shot Tower Coffee at 6th and Christian, has tapped into her other passion and opened DIG Yoga in Bella Vista. After refurbishing a long-empty former stable at 410 Monroe St., she opened the studio in September with her partners and mentors, Sue Elkind and Naime Jezzeney. Jezzeney and Elkind are internationally known yoga instructors who already have a studio in Lambertville and were looking to expand into the city.

On the first floor of the space is Zakti Fitness, where Pete Mattisoffers small group and personal fitness training. The harness hooks dangling from the ceiling show that this guy means business. Upstairs is the spacious yoga room with white brick walls, warm lighting, bamboo flooring and a high rustic beamed ceiling.

Freeman, who is a calm, welcoming, walking advertisement for yoga, plans to also open the space occasionally for art shows, lectures or other community events. The quiet studio is set back from Monroe Street and offers classes for everyone – kids, pregnant women, beginners to advanced – plus specialized teacher training.
Check them out at the free class they offer every Friday. And tell them Passyunk Post said hi.
