Gaggle of civics west of Broad, including the new Melrose Civic, getting together this weekend

Need an excuse to get involved in your neighborhood this year? The civic associations on the west side of Broad Street are mixing things up this Saturday, 7 p.m., in a meeting at the newly relaunched Tap Room on 19th, at 2400 S. 19th St.

The plan is to bring members of all the west of Broad civic groups, including Newbold Neighbors AssociationGirard Estates Neighborhood AssociationMelrose Civic AssociationNewbold Civic AssociationNewbold Community Development Corporation and West Passyunk Neighbors Association.

If you noticed a newcomer on the list, you’re correct. The Melrose Civic Association, which covers Broad to 19th, Wolf Street to Oregon Avenue, is still in the process of establishing itself, but it has done quite a bit and has more planned for the neighborhood. ”There was a need for an association,” said President Frank Genzano.

Newbold Neighbors Association sticks with what it knows

Newbold neighbors civic2After months of considering a name change, the Newbold Neighbors Association has decided to stay as it is, at least for now.

As we reported in January, the civic association had been tossing around alternative monikers, partly to distinguish itself from a neighboring group, the Newbold Civic Association, and also in response to some members who wanted to distance the group from “Newbold,” a word fraught with misunderstanding.

Newbold Neighbors wants a new name too?

NOTE: This post has been updated from an earlier version to clarify how the Newbold name came about.

Call it an identity crisis, maybe.

We told you a couple weeks back that the Dickinson Narrows civic was now going by Dickinson Square West. Now, Newbold Neighbors Association is exploring changing its name too.

The name Newbold only began about 10 years ago, when developer and South Philly Tap Room owner John Longacre bequeathed it onto the area from Tasker to Wolf, 18th to Broad. He cooperated with community leaders in Point Breeze to create the Newbold Civic Association. Then newcomers north of that adopted the name when they created the Newbold Neighbors Association, and a battle over the name has been brewing ever since. Now, the NNA is trying to distance itself from it.

At their next general meeting Feb. 26, the NNA will be considering two fresh titles (although there is always the chance that the name may remain the same): East Point Breeze Neighborhood Association and Point Breeze East Neighborhood Association.
