Holiday Craft Bazaar and Visit with Santa Claus
Join the Friends of the Donatucci Library for a visit with Santa, enjoy some cookies, and shop for local hand-made crafts.

Typewriter Letters to Santa
Children of all ages are welcome to type a letter to Saint Nick on decorated stationary using one of Philly Typewriter’s vintage machines. Take your letter home to mail to the North Pole or bring it to one of East Passyunk Avenue’s Photos With Santa events.

Gold Star Park Winter Lights Celebration
Kids’ art activity and celebration of lights.

Winter Wonderland – South Street Headhouse Tree Lighting
Santa Claus will arrive on a firetruck, greet children, and collect their wish lists. Music, treats, and gift shopping will also be part of the event. CBS3 meteorologist Chelsea Ingram will help Santa count down to the official lighting of the tree at 5:00pm.

When: Sunday, December 2, 4 – 6 pm

Eagles vs. Redskins – Green Legion Home Game Tailgate
One of the best home tailgates in South Philly.

Hanukkah Service in Headhouse Square
The lighting of the menorah led by Rabbi Yochonon Goldman of B’nai Abraham.

Come out and meet Santa, hear live music, and enjoy free hot chocolate provided by Guppy’s.

Join Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary (NICE) for pizza, apps, and drinks. Half the proceeds benefit NICE.

East Passyunk Deck the Ave – A Month of Merrymaking!
Festivities will include the East Passyunk Pop Up Choir, Photos with Santa, Snow Globe Photos, Typewriter Letters to Santa, 8th Annual Ornament Show, Holiday Story Time, Holiday Mummers, Free Parking Saturdays, Holiday QOTA LGBTQ Happy Hour – and more.

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

A look at first draft designs for Childs Elementary schoolyard improvments

Childs, Girard School and Kirkbride School are three South Philly schools that will be seeing some playground improvements. The Big Sandbox, Knight Foundation, TBS and students from the University of Colorado and Iowa State University put together this program to allow these schools and others around the city to receive assistance in reinventing their outdoor play and learning spaces.

All of the schools have been seeking feedback through surveys, but more recently, Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary hosted an information session to present the first draft designs for the schoolyard improvements at G.W. Childs.

What's Happening in:  Girard Estate :  Newbold :  Passyunk Square 

What would you like to see improved at these three South Philly schoolyards?

It was recently announced that three South Philly schools would be planning for schoolyard reinvention, thanks to the Big Sandbox, Knight Foundation, TBS and students from the University of Colorado and Iowa State University. Landscape architecture students at the universities will be helping create designs for improved schoolyards at George W. Childs Elementary, the Stephen Girard School and Eliza B. Kirkbride School.

All three schools are currently working to engage the community in the process. Surveys have been released to ask a number of questions about what improvements you would like to see for the outdoor spaces at the schools.

school talk

Before last school year started, I decided to invest in my neighborhood school even though I don’t yet have children. Having taught in a Philadelphia Public School, I know that hardworking teachers and dedicated students are often overlooked while negative stereotypes of neighborhood schools proliferate. I also know that people without school-aged children may not know where to begin when it comes to connecting with their neighborhood school.
