Nick Elmi’s new restaurant next to Laurel to be named ITV, expected to open next month

Nick Elmi, the Top Chef winner behind East Passyunk Avenue’s Laurel, is getting ready to open a new restaurant next to his current hit dining spot.

Instead of simply making Laurel larger, this new location just next door at 1615 E. Passyunk Ave. will become a wine bar called ITV. The name was derived from his research of the name “Passyunk,” which is a Lenape Indian term that means, “in the valley.”

Restaurant Rankings: Laurel takes PhillyMag’s top spot; LaBan loves Townsend, Barbacoa

It’s not really a secret: South Philly is the place to eat in Philadelphia.

Look no further than Philadelphia Magazine’s recent “50 Best Restaurants of Philadelphia” list. Not only did Laurel at 1617 E. Passyunk Ave. take the top spot (as a newcomer), 16 South Philly hot spots made the list.

South Philly dominates Zagat’s list of Philly’s Top 50 Restaurants

With staples and standouts up and down E. Passyunk Ave., it’s no secret that South Philadelphia is rapidly becoming the place to dine in the city.

Laurel nabs three bells in glowing Laban review

Fresh off his $125,000 triumph on “Top Chef,” Nicholas Elmi won another tough award this weekend – three bells from the Inky’s Craig Laban for his restaurant Laurel, 1617 E. Passyunk Ave.

Laban gushed over Laurel’s torn New Jersey scallop, ricotta gnocchi and albacore starter, which “may be the best raw tuna dish in town.” He also praised the roomy accommodations – for a matchbox BYOB, anyway – as being comfortable as the space as ever been.

There’s also a bit of an explanation for why Elmi so far has passed on cashing in with the inevitable investors that would have followed his TV glory:
