East Point Breeze Neighbors hosting beer tour this weekend

East Point Breeze Neighbors, the community group that recently changed its name from Newbold Neighbors Association, is hosting a neighborhood beer tour.

On Saturday, October 15, the community group will take tours of five houses in the boundaries of the community group, from Broad to 18th and Washington to Passyunk, while enjoying beers from local breweries.

East Point Breeze Neighbors is the new name for Newbold Neighbors Association

This South Philly organization is now the civic association formerly known as Newbold Neighbors.

At a meeting last night, a new name for the organization that represents the area from Broad Street to 18th Street and from Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue was announced. Despite a mix of opinions of those in attendance of the meeting, it was decided through vote that East Point Breeze Neighbors will be the new name of the organization.

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

Newbold Neighbors Association to announce new name tomorrow

The search for a new name for Newbold Neighbors Association began in June when the organization asked the community for opinions on the neighborhood’s current name. Many residents were unhappy with how “Newbold” represented the diversity of the area.

At NNA’s general membership meeting last month, members then voted in favor of a name change. As of Wednesday night, Newbold will be a name of the past for the organization.

Earlier this summer Newbold Neighbors, the RCO that covers Broad Street to 18th Street and from Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue, announced that they were reconsidering the neighborhood name “Newbold.”

Residents have expressed mixed feelings about the name, which some feel only emphasizes the new in the neighborhood, not the diversity of residents that live there. At a meeting last week, the issue was put to a vote. Newbold Neighbors is no longer the community association’s name, but what should the neighborhood be called?

Should Newbold Neighbors Association be renamed to better represent the area?

Many residents have mixed-feelings about the neighborhood name “Newbold,” which spans from Broad Street to 18th Street and from Washington Avenue to West Passyunk Avenue. Some call it Newbold, while others still consider the area as Point Breeze.

Newbold Neighbors Association, which was established in 2007, will be touching on the issue at an upcoming meeting. NNA will be asking residents if the neighborhood group should be renamed to better represent the diversity of residents that live in the area, not just the emphasis on the “new.”
