Joncarl Lachman won the bet, so he gets his champagne

You could say a lot about Passyunk Post, but we ain’t no welchers.

Back when the newly opened Noord was first announced, we dubbed chef Joncarl Lachman’s plan to open by the end of April overly ambitious, pompously listed several reasons and set the over-under for his opening date as May 10. He said he could beat it, wagered a bottle of champagne (the real stuff) and proceeded to open two days before.

Two days? Really?

Vanilya bakery will open next to Passyunk tea room after all

Way back in October, we spotted some activity in the long-vacant former La Piu Bella bridal shop at 1611 E. Passyunk Ave.

Soon to be Vanilya bakery

Soon to be Vanilya bakery. Note that the apartment is already rented

After some digging, we figured out the storefront was linked to a woman who ran a bakery in Brooklyn called Vanilya and speculated that she would be opening a shop here. But she said no decisions had been made on what to do with the space.

Lo and behold, she told us this week:

Porto, a Portuguese-influenced breakfast/lunch spot, coming to old Carman’s

We got some details on the new restaurant coming into the old Carman’s space on 11th and Wharton.

It will be called Porto, a breakfast/lunch/brunch eatery opening toward the end of spring. Owner Christine Liskowicz also hinted at a “surprise” coming for Friday nights.

Soon to be Porto

We caught up with owner Christine Liskowicz and she said she plans to serve coffee, pastries, and a small menu for breakfast and lunch, much of it with a nod toward Portugeuse cuisine. Porto (pronounced Port-oo) is, after all, the second biggest city in Portugal.

Miss Lilia’s General Store will be the organic grocer at 12th and Dickinson

12th and Dickinson

We were able to connect with Jessica Caldwell, who will be opening the shop at 12th and Dickinson we told you about last week. And the best part is that it’s going to be more than just an organic grocer.

The store will be named Miss Lilia’s General Store, after her 22-month-old daughter. Caldwell told us she plans to “take the corner grocery/convenience store to the next level” with a selection of quality produce with emphasis on local and organic, plus grocery products, fresh coffee, bakery items and deli meats & cheeses.

Noord’s Lachman takes our friendly wager on opening date

Last week, we pointed out a nice Zagat interview of Joncarl Lachman, the chef who is bringing his Northern European restaurant Noord to 10th and Tasker. Tucked inside that interview, Lachman said he hoped to be open in early April.

We doubt it. For one, landlord PARC hasn’t started work on the building. They have traditionally worked quickly, but it took Fond nearly four months to open in the corner across the street from Noord. That work was completed during a relatively mild fall, not begun in the middle of winter. The building’s CMX-2.5 zoning designation does allow a restaurant by right, so he wouldn’t have to go before L&I for a use variance, but no building permits have been issued yet, according to the L&I website.

Besides, Lachman is still living in Chicago and plans to eventually live in the two-story apartment above the restaurant, so where will his home base be to during the process?

There’s a looooot of work to be done

For those reasons, we put the over-under for the first night of service at May 10 and asked if anyone wanted to take us up on that bet. Well, Lachman contacted us and said he thinks he can beat it. There’s a fancy bottle of champagne on the line for the winner.

So, dear readers, whose side are you on? Did we make a fool’s wager?
