You recently had your chance to grab some drinks at Jefferson Square in Pennsport. Now there’s a new beer garden popping up in South Philly.

From September 1 through September 5, you can swing by the FDR Park at Broad and Pattison to enjoy drinks, food and entertainment thanks to the Parks on Tap program created by Parks and Recreation and the Fairmount Park Conservancy.

What's Happening in:  Packer Park 

$4 million in improvements under way for section of FDR Park, G-ho rec center

Heavy machinery has been rumbling away in the southern section of FDR Park, next to the skate park under I-95, to make way for a new baseball field that’s partially funded by the Phillies.

The field is part of a $4 million effort here with Major League Baseball’s Urban Youth Academy, a year-round physical training and educational program for teens “who are serious about going to college and making a life in sports,” said the Daily News.

Would getting this water park be worth a casino on Pattison Avenue?

The idea of a casino at Front and Pattison seems, well, a bit out there. But what if it came with a water park, zip lines, dry ski area, paintball course, two hotels, a movie theater, concert venue and more stuff?

Plan Philly reports that PHL Local Gaming, one of six bidders for the final casino license, is proposing all that for the industrial land along Pattison between Front and 7th streets to go along with its Casino Revolution.

One huge caveat: The first thing to be built would be the slots/table games barn at Front and Pattison, and the rest would be built in phases, with most of the more interesting amenities supposedly coming in the “medium term” or “long term.”(pdf)

At long last, Philly’s real boxing hero is getting a statue

joe frazier - Larry NowlanRocky resonates around the world as Philly’s boxing legend, but Smokin’ Joe Frazier was the real deal.

Now, Frazier will be duly memorialized with his own bronze statue in South Philly outside the awfully named Xfinity Live! at 11th Street and Pattison Avenue.

Organizers say they’ve raised enough money to move forward. The eight-foot statue, which will be created by Larry Nowlan, the same artist who did the Harry Kalas statue at Citizens Bank Park, the mayor’s office announced yesterday.
