Proposed Freda Meat facility mixed-use project is all about the billboard

The long-standing Freda Meats factory on Front Street in Pennsport could become a a mixed-use project with 48 apartments, a ground-floor parking garage, 4 townhouses and 30,000 sq. ft of commercial space. While the concept of transforming this Pennsport block is huge in itself, the major part of the project is a 120 ft. tall LED billboard that would be placed on the roof, in replacement of the outdated and just-too-short to be seen from I-95 structure currently on top of the warehouse.

At Tuesday night’s Pennsport Civic Association meeting, the room of 50 area residents expressed concerns mainly about the massive billboard that they believe would affect the neighborhood’s view, even more so than the existing Chickie’s and Pete’s billboard. Throughout the presentation it was emphasized by the development team that without this billboard, the project will not happen.

Developer proposes 10 high-rises, 100 townhomes for large stretch of Columbus Boulevard

Columbus Boulevard could be seeing some huge development if a zoning ordinance is approved. K4 developers presented to the Pennsport Civic Association last week, sharing the high volume plan to bring 10-story residential high rises and as many as 100 townhomes to a location on Columbus Boulevard.

Last year K4 purchased the 18-acre property on Columbus between Washington Avenue and Reed Street from the Sheet Metal Workers Local 19. The developers are also hoping to acquire another 8-acre property from the union.

Urban Jungle to open second shop on Water Street in Pennsport

It’s official: Urban Jungle is expanding to Pennsport.

Owner Curt Alexander presented his plans for a second garden shop in front of the Pennsport Civic Association last night.

“Our shop on Passyunk Avenue is bursting at the seams,” Alexander said as he explained the plans to revamp the space at 1721-25 S. Water Street near Target. Retail will only be a portion at the new operations as Alexander mentioned he wanted to focus on the landscape displays and even create a space to host various events such as wedding receptions.
