Blatstein pitching 400,000 square feet of retail for broad and Washington

The proposed “retail hub” for Broad and Washington will include 400,000 square feet of leasable space, according to a commercial real estate listing that went live last week.

The listing describes the project by developer Bart Blatstein as a “vertical shopping center” that will include a parking structure. Another interesting detail is that the site will also include the empty surface lot on other side of 13th Street, if this image with the listing is to be believed.

The Broad and Washington lot is also the proposed site for the Philadelphia Arts Market, championed by Elisabeth Garson, creative director of local advertising agency Garson Design. She said she would know by early February whether a Blatstein will let her set up shop on the lot for this summer.

Proposed ‘Philadelphia Arts Market’ gets big booster in Bob Brady

Powerbroker U.S. Rep. Bob Brady has agreed to help make the Philadelphia Arts Market, which we told you in September had been proposed for Broad and Washington, to become a reality.

For a little background, Elisabeth Garson, a South Philly-based freelance creative director who is spearheading the initiative, said the open-air market would operate from March to September on weekends with dozens of craft makers, a farmers market and flea market vendors, plus food trucks and a stage for area student and musical performances.

Her first choice is the lot on northeast corner of Broad and Washington, owned by New York-based Hudson Capital, but that is a long shot as Hudson has sat on it for several years. Second choice is the northwest corner, which is made up of two lots, one owned by the U.S. government and the other controlled by the Philadelphia Industrial Development Corporation.

Could this be the future site of the Philadelphia Arts Market instead?

Could this northwest corner of B&W be the future site of the Philadelphia Arts Market instead?

Enter Bob Brady, whom Garson enlisted.

‘The Philadelphia Arts Market’ proposed for huge Broad and Washington lot

A massive outdoor food and flea market combined with an events space has been proposed for the huge eyesore of a vacant lot on the northeast corner of Broad and Washington, where Cirque du Soleil used to set up.

The South Broad Street Neighbors Association will hear a proposal for The Philadelphia Arts Market tomorrow night, Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at Methodist Hospital, 2301 S. Broad St., in the Morgan Conference Room on the basement level. To be clear, this project is in its infancy and not a done deal.

The market, which would operate on weekends from March to September, would “feature dozens of craft makers, farmers market and flea market vendors, the city’s best food trucks, and a stage for area student and musical performances (School of Rock, University of the Arts etc).”
