What's Happening in:  Point Breeze

Will the commercial space in this Point Breeze mixed-use development become a new food co-op?

Naked Philly, the real estate news website run by OCF Realty, shared a snippet of news on Friday about plans for a “big glass box” that will descend upon Point Breeze Avenue.

The plan for the project is to keep some of the remaining structure, which is currently Point Save Super, and add an additional two floors of the more modern-looking, glass-box-like structure to the top of the building at 1245 Point Breeze Ave. While the plans themselves are worth checking out, what may be the more interesting news about this project is the food co-op that could be in the works for the ground-floor commercial space.

Rumor Mill: Has the Interior Concepts building been sold for $2.3 million?

Last week we told you that Interior Concepts at 1701 E. Passyunk Ave. is planning to close. While some were skeptical about about the validity of the “store closing” signs, some sources tell us that the building has been sold.

According to Interior Concepts’ owner, Mark Leon, the building was sold about two months ago and that he plans to close in May. So how much did this prime location on East Passyunk Avenue sell for?

The post drew more than two dozen comments, most from people excited by the prospect. But Longacre himself told us it’s not true.

Rumor Mill: Is ‘farm-to-table restaurant’ too good to be true for 4th and Cross?

Want us to check in on a neighborhood rumor? Email us at punk@passyunkpost.com with the subject line Rumor Mill and we’ll see if we can get to the bottom of it.

UPDATE: It’s not a rumor. A BYOB called 4th and Cross is headed there.

For those of you who are not familiar with Bell’s Delly at 1527 S. 4th St. (at Cross Street), please don’t adjust your screen, it is indeed spelled “Delly.”

More importantly, there appears to be something in the works for the long-vacant space that’s a stone’s throw from Grindcore House and Dickinson Square Park.

Rumor Mill: Is Wegman’s coming to Broad and Washington? FALSE

This one came straight out of the too good to be true department – that Wegman’s was coming to the Bart Blatestein development at Broad and Washington.

A source who would know, but who required anonymity, told us that in no uncertain terms, Wegman’s “is definitely NOT coming to Broad and Washington.” Naked Philly heard the same thing from their sources.

Broad and washington retail - no wegmans

The whole thing started on Twitter, and it quickly turned into an all-out frenzy. A Wegman’s spokesperson also told us they have no plans for a location in Philly proper.

Rumor Mill: Are bike thefts going up?

Here’s a warning sent to us at our tipline at punk@passyunkpost.com from a reader who got burned locking up her bike outside her apartment:

I am emailing to mention the fact that a lot of bikes have been stolen on my block in the last week. I am on Passyunk between Mifflin and Moore streets. I had my bike locked to my mom’s bike and the thieves actually took bolt cutters and cut through her frame to get mine.

One reader's dearly departed bike

The remnants of one the dearly departed bike. Ouch

The reader said her bike was a single speed worth about $300. Her mom’s, which was basically cut in half, was a three-speed cruiser. This is the second report of bike thefts we’ve gotten in the past couple weeks. So is this a bona fide crime trend?
