Take a look at schoolyard improvement designs for Childs, Kirkbride and Girard Schools

Since October, we’ve been sharing with you the progress of schoolyard designs for three South Philadelphia schools that would be receiving updated designs for their play and learning spaces thanks to a program through the Big Sandbox, the Knight Foundation, TBS and students from the University of Colorado and Iowa State University.

After a few months of the design process, including feedback from students, parents and community members, the final design boards are completed for George W. Childs Elementary, the Stephen Girard School and Eliza B. Kirkbride School.

What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing 

‘Dragon Green’ Southwark schoolyard design wins Community Design Collaborative award

Southwark Elementary is in the process of raising money for a schoolyard redesign to create an expansive “Dragon Green” for students to play and learn. There’s also plans to transform the school from just an educational facility into a multi-use “community school.”

At the end of October, the Community Design Collaborative awarded the Community Design Award to the Southwark “Dragon Green” schoolyard design for its “intimate collection of elements.”

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

A look at first draft designs for Childs Elementary schoolyard improvments

Childs, Girard School and Kirkbride School are three South Philly schools that will be seeing some playground improvements. The Big Sandbox, Knight Foundation, TBS and students from the University of Colorado and Iowa State University put together this program to allow these schools and others around the city to receive assistance in reinventing their outdoor play and learning spaces.

All of the schools have been seeking feedback through surveys, but more recently, Neighbors Investing in Childs Elementary hosted an information session to present the first draft designs for the schoolyard improvements at G.W. Childs.
