Stories for a good cause

Foodies take note! Stories that may make you drool will be flowing at a benefit for the South Philly Food Co-op tonight. That’s when award-winning storyteller Hillary Rea brings her live storytelling show to the Adobe Cafe, 1919 E. Passyunk Ave. The event will feature a colorful line-up of storytellers sharing true stories inspired by the evening’s At the Table theme.


Alison Fritz, Operations Committee chair for the Co-op, said the idea for the event came from Rea. “She is a member-owner and near neighbor of the Co-op. She recognizes that it takes the power of our membership to get our store open. She was looking for a way to use her storytelling skills and connections to benefit our capital campaign.” To tie-in with the Co-op’s own story, Rea proposed a special, food-focused edition of her bi-monthly, Tell Me A Story event.

South Philly Food Co-op has signed a lease on a location in East Passyunk Crossing. The storefront is a 3,400 sq. ft. ground floor space in a mixed-use building being developed at 2031 S. Juniper St.

Try South Philly Food Co-op’s new coffee blend at coffee workshop this week

One of the South Philly Food Co-op‘s recent additions is a CSA-style coffee program in partnership with Philly Fair Trade Roasters. Since you can now order this custom roast for pickup on a monthly-basis, the co-op wants you to be able to learn more about their new blend of coffee, in addition to information on different varieties of beans and the methods of brewing.

Adam Lees of Philly Fair Trade Roasters, in partnership with the South Philly Food Co-op, will be leading a workshop at Chhaya at 1819 E. Passyunk Ave. on Thursday, September 22 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Learn about the future of the South Philly Food Co-op on May 25

We’ve been following along with the South Philly Food Co-op‘s efforts to start a grocery store since Passyunk Post first began in 2012. That’s a long time, isn’t it? The organization is still working towards finding a location and making this store a reality, and they’re doing better than ever.
