The South Philly Co-op is gearing up for one of its biggest fundraisers of the year, the South Philly Garden Tour, and it wants YOU to strut your stuff:

You’ve been working hard this spring, digging in the dirt of your planters, pots, raised beds, community garden plots…Now it’s time to show off all the fruits (and vegetables, and herbs, and flowers, and…) of your labors!

For the third year in a row, the South Philly Food Co-op invites you to exhibit your garden! The Co-op is organizing its Third Annual South Philadelphia Garden Tour and we would love to have your participation. Due to growing turn-out and garden participation, we’ve decided to focus on the south Broad Street corridor, showcasing home gardens from Washington to Snyder, 11th to 17th Street for this year’s tour. Check out photos of last year’s tour here.

The tour happens on Saturday, Sept. 7. If you’re interested in showing off your garden, check here for requirements and other information. The deadline to apply has been extended to Aug. 1.

The real-estate committee that’s searching for a site for the impending South Philly Food Co-op has seen more than 15 locations.

And no, they won’t tell anyone where they’re looking.

“Mentioning any specific spot puts us at risk for powering up the rumor mill,” the co-op said in a blog post on its website. Continue Reading →

The South Philly Co-op is in a pickle, kind of

Pickling is all the rage right now, and with George Sabatino and his pickles gone from Stateside, this class is the perfect timing for us to take matters into our own hands.

South Philly Food Co-op’s Food Quizzo is tonight at Wishing Well

As part of the South Philly Food Co-op‘s membership drive – in which they’re targeting 75 members in 75 days – they’re hosting a food-themed quizzo tonight at 7 p.m. at the Wishing Well.

Most of the questions are supplied by local … um, dignitaries? … including one for the South Philly history category from your favorite South Philly website. That’s us, right?

We told you earlier this month about the Co-op’s real estate committee, which is getting antsy about scouting around for a spot to put this theoretical grocery store. But they can’t do it until they surpass 400 members. Hence, the membership drive and associated events, such as the quizzo.

We’ll lead by example, so the South Philly Food Co-op won’t be so sad

Everyone’s favorite theoretical grocery store, the South Philly Food Co-op, posted a interesting blog post and a cute, guilt-inducing picture on its website last week.

Let’s perk these people up!

Titled Why is the Real Estate Committee So Sad?, the post laments that the membership numbers aren’t quite where they’d like them to be.

We’re usually a happy bunch!  I swear!

But these days the Co-op Real Estate Committee has been a bit blue.  Why?  We are ready to start looking for a space for our new neighborhood co-op, however, the Co-op market study tells us that we shouldn’t secure a location until we have 400 members.  We only have about 340.

That motivated us to spread the word that you can even join on a payment plan, with the first payment plan as low as $25.

You can even get started by clicking on this fancy logo to the right (did we mention the low, low payment plan?).
