Historical Commission’s Architectural Committee reviews updated Royal Theater plans

The development process for South Street’s Royal Theater has been moving forward slowly. The project was connected to developer Carl Dranoff until October, when he sold the property to Robert Roskamp, a developer with work in Florida and Chester County.

Roskamp’s redevelopment vision includes the reuse of some of the historic theater’s structure, but with the addition of new construction to create a mix of apartments and townhouses. The project went before the Historical Commission’s Architectural Committee this week.

Royal Theater will no longer be developed by Carl Dranoff

It has been a long process for the Royal Theater on South Street. The property has been sitting vacant for years, with plans for redevelopment moving forward very slowly.

Now developer Carl Dranoff has sold the property which he intended to develop into 50 luxury residential units and ground-floor retail at 1524 South St. Robert Roskamp, a developer with work in Florida and Chester County, will now be developing the Royal Theater with a similar vision to Dranoff.

Little Spoon Cafe, Bing Bing Dim Sum honored in Community Design Collaborative Storefront Challenge

A South Street West cafe and an East Passyunk Avenue restaurant were among the winners in the Community Design Collaborative’s 2016 Storefront Challenge. The bi-yearly competition highlights how these more recent businesses are working to transform their spaces, creating curb appeal across the city.

Two South Philly businesses came out as winners of this year’s awards. Little Spoon Cafe, located at 1500 South St., and Bing Bing Dim Sum at 1638 E. Passyunk Ave., were both honored.
