To-Do List: Craft Balboa, Punk Rock Flea Market, Lagunitas tasting, history happy hour

  •  The SS Nuemann Goretti High School will be celebrating the fifth annual Crafty Balboa festival with a giveaway. In addition to the “First 50 in the Door” goodie bags, everyone will have a chance to win one of many prizes from Craft Balboa and shops along East Passyunk Avenue.   • The Punk Rock Flea Market is once again here for anyone who still has holiday shopping to do. The flea market be on Saturday and Sunday at the Punk Rock Flea Market Dome. It offers goods ranging from secondhand antiques and vintage clothing to handmade art and custom jewelry. Admissions is a $3 donation per person.

Friday and Saturday

  • Takeout beer shop Brew is offering free tastings of Lagunitas Friday from 5 to 7 p.m. and Deschutes Satruday from 5 to 7 p.m.  Also, all December the taproom is offering $10.25 6-packs of Lagunitas 12 oz bottles, including New Dogtown Pale Ale,  IPA, and Pils.

15 of city’s best bars call South Philly home, Philly mag says

Philadelphia magazine said in its latest issue that 15 of the city’s 50 best bars make their homes on or below South Street.

In the Top 10 were American Sardine Bar (4), Brauhaus Schmitz (8) and Devil’s Den (9).

Buzzy spots like South Philadelphia Tap Room and Stateside made the list (14 and 37), but also places that are less likely to pop up on food blogs all over town, including Grace Tavern (28) and Fountain Porter (39).

What's Happening in:  Newbold 

South Philly Tap Room celebrating 10 years this weekend

Can you believe it?

South Philly Tap Room has been slinging craft beer at 1509 Mifflin St. for 10 years, and the Newbold pioneer is throwing a helluva party to celebrate.

SPTR-10 years

The three-day celebration kicks off Friday Oct. 18 with a look at the past, “with food specials from past menus (lion, anyone?) and an early-era draught list (hand poured black and tans!),” according to the event listing on the website. A special quizzo will start at 9 p.m.

On Saturday night, the kitchen will stress the present as the Best of Philly 2103 Bar Burger by strutting their burger stuff starting at 5 p.m. Expect “5 specialty burgers and 10 IPAs. And yes, there will be Russian River Pliny the Elder, Russian River Blind Pig, Green Flash Bullet, Stone Enjoy By 11.12.13, and more.”

South Philly Tap Room Wheat Beer

 

South Philly Tap Room, 1509 Mifflin St., is busting outside for a block party, it’s 8th annual wheat beer festival. More than 30 wheat brews will be flowing for only $3 a piece. Plus expect BBQ from chef Scott Schroeder and live music from West Philadelphia Orchestra, Adam and Dave’s Bloodline, Arrah and the Ferns, and Robotrippers.

ReNewbold finally about to get moving

ReNewbold, the long-promised green development at 16th and Moore, is finally about to get under way.

About two years after the project was announced, developer John Longacre of LPMG Companies told us last week that the architects believe they’re about 30 days away from securing permits.

“So I expect the groundbreaking could be 30 to 45 days,” said Longacre, who owns the nearby South Philly Tap Room, American Sardine Bar and Brew/Ultimo coffee.

ReNewbold, 16th and Moore

We noticed last week that the two-story properties were on the market and checked in with the realtor, who said they were finally able to secure financing.
