S.S. United States could sail away from Philadelphia as luxury cruise liner

For the first time in years, the S.S. United States finally seems to be on a path towards development and away from the scrapyard. A preliminary agreement was announced for the ship in mid-December without revealing any details about the vessel’s future.

Yesterday it was announced that the company that signed a purchase option for the ship is luxury travel company, Crystal Cruises, who hope to have this ship sailing once again as a cruise liner.

Redevelopment plans to be announced for S.S. United States

$600,000 was raised in 2015 to save the S.S. United States from the scrapyard, at least for one more year.

At that time, the future of the vessel was unknown, other than some proposals floating around for the redevelopment of the ship. Now the S.S. United States Conservancy has finally signed an option agreement for the development of the ship.

S.S. United States saved for at least another year

The last update we gave you on the S.S. United States gave hope for the future of the ship as it approached the stated deadline to save the vessel at the end of October.

In the span of that month, donors from all over the world gave enough money to keep the ship afloat and away from the scrapyard for at least another year.

While it looked like the famed ocean liner with the fastest timed eastbound trans-Atlantic voyage was in dire straights, officials from the SS United States Conservancy said they have a “preliminary” agreement for the redevelopment of the ship that sits in the Delaware River at Snyder Ave.
