Whitman Council will oppose the move of scrap metal shop to behind Ikea

F&J Scrap recently packed up their shop located just north of Target at 1701 S. Water St. A sign hung on the side yard of the business stated that it would be moving to an unknown location on Weccacoe Avenue in Whitman. That’s the stretch of road behind Ikea and home to John’s Roast Pork.

Richard Lazer, vice president of Whitman Council, made it clear last week that the neighborhood will be opposing such a move.

“We’re fighting it,” said Lazer. “We’re against them coming to Whitman [and] trying to do the best we can to promote development.” That’s quite clear with all of the recent action on Swanson Street.

Paving on Swanson Street a sign of things to come?

Have you seen that a large patch of Swanson Street between Target and ShopRite has been repaved? You may remember that we recently brought you the news that Adventurer’s Mini Golf was coming in May to 38 Jackson St. in Whitman and with it potential improvements to the street experience on Swanson Street.

According to Councilman Mark Squilla, those plans are in the works and this paving is part of a bigger plan.

“I have been meeting with the Streets Department and Conrail on street improvements and a master plan for Swanson [Street],” Councilman Squilla wrote in an email. He also mentioned that potholes will continued to be filled along Swanson Street and that they look to hopefully re-stripe the stretch south of Snyder Avenue.

Former ECW Arena won’t be a Troc music venue, but gets new life as ’2300 Arena’

The former site of the ECW Arena, a historic pro-wrestling venue located at 2300 S. Swanson Street and birthplace of ECW Wrestling, is set to reopen under new ownership tomorrow, March 22 featuring the Light Heavyweight Title Bout from Cage Fury Fighting Championships.

Of course, that means that the owner of the Trocadero will not be taking over the arena to turn it into a music venue after all.

The 2300 Arena is run by CEO/General Manager Roger Artigiani, who previously ran the arena as The Asylum. From a look at the events schedule, it seems like the new group wants to hold true to the fight-centric history of the site. The Philadelphia Regional Golden Gloves Championship is scheduled for April 12th followed by a Mexican Style wrestling event called “Lucha Libre Mexicana” on April 27th.

As you may recall, “The Arena” was recently bought by Arena Operating LLC, a group lead by Joanna Pang of The Trocadero. They looked to re-imagine the space in to a concert hall for the burgeoning Swanson St. area. While that was, ah-hem, music to a lot peoples’ ear, it didn’t pan out.

SouthBowl is rising out of the ground on Oregon Ave.

Finally, we’re getting some visual confirmation that the planned bowling alley/arcade/batting cage project on Oregon Avenue is actually happening.

South Bowl

An eagle-eyed reader told us last week that some steel spires were jutting out of the ground at  19 E. Oregon Ave., which we told you in February was going to be the southern counterpart of NorthBowl in Northern Liberties.

We dubbed it SouthBowl, which was apparently premature because they haven’t settled on a name. But wouldn’t it be kind of stupid to name it anything else?

Trocadero crew to open South Philly music venue

A liquor license has popped up on the former Asylum wrestling arena at Swanson and Ritner streets, and it was filed by the same people behind the Trocadero in Chinatown, the Insider reports.

From the blog post:

This suggests that this corner, next to the Forman Mills store, will hear the beats of music, rather than beat-downs. The Asylum, also known as ECW, had hosted pro wrestling, boxing and MMA events for several years.
