19 South Philly dining destinations rank on Philly Mag’s ’50 Best Restaurants’ list

Every year Philly Mag releases their list of the city’s best restaurants. With South Philly’s top notch dining spots, we’ve come to expect a strong turnout on lists like this one. For the end of 2016, these 19 South Philly spots ranked in the top 50.

Laurel has been knocked out of the number one spot that it held on the list for years, but that doesn’t change the East Passyunk Avenue restaurant’s reputation one bit. After all, it is now a four bell restaurant, and number 2 on the list isn’t too bad either.

When you think about ideal travel destinations, does South Philly come to mind? Travel + Leisure thought of our wonderful city when compiling a list of 50 best travel destinations for 2017.

Townsend ranked as one of ‘America’s Best New Restaurants’ by Bon Appetit

In case you weren’t already aware (we know you are), the restaurant scene on East Passyunk Avenue is pretty great. So great that another one of the restaurants on the Avenue is getting some extra praise on a national level.

It’s not really a secret: South Philly is the place to eat in Philadelphia.

What's Happening in:  East Passyunk Crossing 

Townsend, at 1623 E. Passyunk Ave., dazzles both Laban & Philly mag

A pair of glowing reviews has given a big boost to Townsend, the newest fine-dining addition to the Passyunk restaurant boom.

The Inquirer’s Craig Laban gave chef Townsend Wentz’s unapologetically French reboot of the former Sophia’s and Salt and Pepper a stellar three-bell review. And Trey Popp of Philadelphia magazine lauded it with three of four stars.

Laban particularly was as pleased with the restaurant’s embrace of fine-dining touches — actual table cloths! —  as he was the refined cuisine coming from the kitchen. He says:
