What clean and green improvements should be made in Point Breeze?

While improvements are being made to the trash problem around the city, like the increased street cleaning through Ready, Willing & Able in Point Breeze, it is still a huge problem (as a Twitter account dedicated to South Philly trash also points out).

Point Breeze Community Development Corporation’s Clean and Green committee is creating a plan for future improvements to the neighborhood and is seeking feedback from nearby residents.

Twitter account brings awareness to South Philly trash problem

Trash is scattered around the streets, sidewalks and vacant lots of our city. Things like the spring cleanup, new trash cleaning programs and the potential for city-wide street cleaning are helpful, but they’re still not solving this deeply-rooted trash problem.

Submit a project and volunteer for upcoming Philly Spring Cleanup events

While a street cleaning program isn’t happening at the moment, you can still pitch in to make the streets in your neighborhood a bit nicer by cleaning up trash.

Philly Spring Cleanup is bringing together communities throughout the city for a 9th year of this annual cleanup. At this year’s event, there are as many as 30 opportunities in South Philly alone.

Passyunk Square extending sidewalk sweeping program

Since the trash problem in the city isn’t going to resolve itself, some organizations are taking action with more regular cleanups, since a bill for a street cleaning program likely won’t be moving forward too quickly.

Passyunk Square Civic Association has had a sidewalk sweeping program for years now. The program is now working to extend east of 9th Street and north of Federal Street.

Guide to improving the trash problem on your block

Little by little, changes are being made in the city to help reduce the amount of trash on the streets. Earlier this year, two new bills were introduced to require businesses to provide more trash cans and now pedal-operated trash cans are being installed, starting with one located in Point Breeze.
