Hegeman String Band’s clubhouse on Two Street sold for residential redevelopment

Here’s a big thank you to the friendly neighborhood tipster who pointed this out. You can help too. So, if you see something, say something – in an email to punk@passyunkpost.com.

The clubhouse of the Hegeman String Band at 1247 S. 2nd St., in the heart of the Mummers row on Two Street, has been sold to a developer for residential conversion. But the club’s not moving just yet, and they hope to stay close by.

A tipster told us about a notice that was posted for residential zoning at the corner of 2nd and Wharton, and city records show the 2,700 square foot building was sold in July for $252,000 to Cosmopolitan Properties.

‘Two Street,’ a gay Mummer rom-com, surpasses goal on Indiegogo

Local theater troupe Tribe of Fools went the crowdfunding route in order to create one of the more uniquely Philly plays you’re going to see at the FringeArts Festival this year. They recently surpassed their goal of  $5,000 with a few weeks to spare.

Their latest play is called “Two Street,” a romantic comedy about two men who fall in love but happen to be in rival Fancy Brigades. Think of it as the most Philly Romeo & Juliet ever created. Love always gets in the way of a good strut, doesn’t it?

Federal Donuts, located at 1219 S. 2nd Street (Manton Street), told us that the “shop needs some love” and that they’ll be back with new flavors after the repairs and deep cleaning are completed. They didn’t say exactly what needed to be repaired, but the promise of new flavors is an exciting proposition.

Disappointing news dropped over the weekend: Guerrilla Ultima will no longer be posted up outside of 2nd Street Brew House offering their indoor/outdoor barbeque’d goodness to compliment the steady flow of craft suds. It certainly was a great concept, like The Garage before The Garage, you know? Chef Robert Leggett wouldn’t get into specifics but he did leave us with this tweet:

City-owned parking lot in Pennsport headed for development? Some opponents are organizing

Thanks to the neighborhood tipster who notified us of this story. If you want us to get to the bottom of something, please email us at punk@passyunkpost.com.

A city-owned parking lot near the popular Herron Playground in a booming section of Pennsport will be “marketed for sale for future development within the next 30 days,” according to a notice posted at the site that’s dated Nov. 7.

Parking at the lot, which is comprised of 1406-1412 S. 2nd St. and 206-210 Reed St., all owned by the city, is expected to end by Feb. 15, 2014, the letter says.

Some neighbors are organizing to oppose development of the lot because its 20 or so spots provide parking for visitors to the playground. The neighbors are starting a petition and have spoken with Councilman Mark Squilla, who one tipster told us that Squilla “said he met with neighbors and is exploring solutions.”
