South Philly Barbacoa set to replace Vegan Commissary at 1703 S. 11th St.

South Philly Barbacoa, the popular food cart located at 8th and Watkins, has closed up their cart and will soon be opening up shop in an East Passyunk Crossing storefront.

Ever been to a vegan steakhouse? Here’s your chance, kind of

OK, so it’s obviously not a vegan steakhouse, but thanks to an intriguing partnership, Philadelphia Magazine decided to call this event by that name.

The Vegan Commissary, which has been delighting meatless devotees since late last year, is pairing up with the chef of Center City’s Barcly Prime steakhouse for a “Foobooz After Dark” dinner at the restaurant at 1703 S. 11th St. on March 29 starting at 11:30 p.m.

Says the food blog:

Keep in mind, when we named this dinner “Vegan Steakhouse”, it was only because of the steakhouse chef. Now that we’ve seen the menu, it looks like the two of them have wandered pretty far from the vegan-in-a-steakhouse concept. All the way to edible chopsticks, it seems…

First Pics: Vegan Commissary now open at 1703 S 11th St.

The BYOB cafe called Vegan Commissary has opened at 1703 S. 11th St., the old location of the short-lived Lil Snuffs sandwich shop.

Owner Steve Laurence has hired chef Leigh Needham to create a blackboard menu that changes according to “whatever is fresh that day,” Laurence said. Menu items when we stopped by included butternut squash gnudi, spicy miso soup, a poached pear salad, a spicy tofu bahn mi and polenta with root vegetables and melted greens. The full menu is below.

Get a sneak preview of the new Vegan Commissary coming to 1703 S. 11th St.

The forthcoming Vegan Commissary will be offering  a preview this weekend during a pop-up at its new location,  1703 S. 11th St., the former location of Lil’ snuff’s sandwich shop.

Owner Steve Laurence says, “We’ve had some delays getting the room finished and we want to give people a chance to check out the food and get an idea of what we’re working on.”

The pop-up goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Friday Nov. 29 (which Laurence is calling Green Friday) and Saturday Nov. 30. $5 will get you a shot of Carrot-Apple Coconut Curry Soup, a choice of two mini sandwiches and choice of one of their sweet bites.

That mysterious vegan restaurant that we told you about a couple weeks ago will be called Vegan Commissary, and owner Steve Laurence is hoping to open before the holidays.

From meaty sandwiches to meatless delights

Laurence told us today that the cafe, which has the same name as his vegan wholesale business, has signed a deal to open at 1703 S. 11th St., the old location of the short-lived Lil Snuffs sandwich shop.

He said they’re planning dinner and weekend brunch at neighborhood-friendly prices – “nothing over $20.”
