‘Land Buoy’ installed at Pier 53; park opens Aug. 15

UPDATE: An opening ceremony has been scheduled for 10 a.m. Aug. 15. So, yes, the park is in fact opening that day.

A construction crew is rushing to finish work at Pier 53 for the park’s debut, which could happen as early as Aug. 15, according to a designer at the site.

The “Land Buoy” structure designed by artist Jody Pinto has been installed and the boardwalk has mostly been completed at the park, which juts into the Delaware River behind the Sheetmetal Workers union hall at Washington Avenue and Columbus Boulevard.

‘Sneak Peek’ event announced for under-construction Pier 53 park

The Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will host a “sneak peek” event at Pier 53/Washington Avenue Green on Saturday, June 21 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

You may remember that this event was alluded to earlier at the history lecture held at the Mummer’s Museum in May. The event will touch on the impressive history of the pier as an immigration station as well as focus on the ongoing construction efforts. There will also be take-home arts and crafts available for children.

Mother’s Day event at Washington Avenue Green is tomorrow; Pier 53 moving forward with ‘tentative date’

CORRECTION: June 21 is more of a “sneak peek” at the Pier 53 park, not a “tentative opening date,” DRWC said in an email: “We haven’t set a tentative date yet. The 21st is going to be an event celebrating the history and ecology of Pier 53, but is not a ribbon cutting. More details and times will be announced.”

Washington Avenue Green/Pier 53 is hosting a free nature-inspired event tomorrow, May 10, that includes arts and crafts, family activities and lunch. The festivities run from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and kick off the opening day to the Love Your Park Week, a citywide celebration of Philadelphia’s diverse range of parks.

This event will look to focus on the natural experience of Washington Avenue Green as well help those still in need of a last-minute Mother’s Day gift by way of “Make & Take” arts and crafts opportunities.

Washington Avenue Green has been the subject of some exciting news recently as permits were granted to begin construction on the future pier park. While speaking at a history lecture for Pier 53 on May 4, Susan McAninley noted they have a “tentative opening date” for the park on June 21 after the tough winter delayed construction.

Pier 53 Update: Permits granted for construction of boardwalk

Whether you call it Pier 53 or Washington Avenue Green, the new pier park located at Columbus Boulevard and Washington Avenue is a step closer to reality. Permits were recently granted that allow for 1) the “installation of erosion and sedimentation controls” and 2) the construction of the large “boardwalk” component that runs parallel to the park.

Pier 53 will look to focus on the ecology of the site as well as celebrating the pier’s past as an immigration station. The construction of the boardwalk will offer visitors a dynamic view of the Delaware River. Artist Jody Pinto, who crafted the Finger Span in the Wissahickon, will also be designing an illuminated column entitled “Land Buoy” as public art at the tip of the pier.
