That was quick. South Philly Barbacoa will NOT be in Zagar warehouse

The proposed lamb barbecue joint by chef Benjamin Miller and his wife Cristina Martinez, South Philly Barbacoa, will not be located in Isaiah Zagar’s mosaic warehouse on Watkins Street after all.

Probably not going to be a restaurant at all.

Miller gave an information-only presentation to the East Passyunk Crossing Civic Association’s zoning committee last month to gauge community feedback and met “considerable resistance from the neighborhood about a restaurant opening there,” he told us yesterday.

“I hope that something really cool can happen there so it can show off that awesome space but I don’t think it will be restaurant,” Miller said. “It’s a residential neighborhood, on a little side street, and there’s no parking. But it was a great idea for our project.”

South Philly Barbacoa, proposed for Zagar warehouse, to debut preview in a cart

The couple behind the Mexican lamb barbecue joint that is proposed for Isaiah Zagar’s massive mosaic warehouse  just can’t wait.

Ben Miller and his wife Cristina Martinez will launch a lamb barbecue cart on Sunday as a preview for what they plan at 1002 Watkins St., says City Paper.

Beginning at 7 a.m. Miller and Martinez are going to be setting up their cart outside of La Rosa, a Mexican bakery on the corner of 8th and Watkins.

They’ll be out there till supplies run out.

Isaiah Zagar wants a business partner to help him do something with Watkins Street

Earlier this week, we showed off Isaiah Zagar’s magnificent Watkins Street space, a sparkling, frenetic piece of gargantuan artwork that he’s been working on just off 10th Street for seven years.

He’s nearly finished, but there’s just one problem. He doesn’t know what to do with it.

“I thought it could be an event space, or a restaurant, but I don’t know,” Zagar told us in an interview. ”I don’t know how to fulfill the next step.”
