Kind notes and sidewalk art brings positivity to vandalism site

South Philly Co-op Playschool‘s parents and children, along with other area residents, have been taking to the Meglio Furs storefront at Broad and Wharton to spread positivity after last week’s post-election vandalism.

The playschool spent Sunday drawing chalk art at the location, while others have been using post-its to spread messages like, “I stand with you against hate.” Continue Reading →

Point Breeze community continuing to fight for Smith School

The Smith School at 19th and Wharton was one of the schools put up for sale in 2013, along with Vare in Pennsport and the now-transformed Bok.

What's Happening in:  Point Breeze 

Tentative agreement reached for Concordia Group’s plans for development of Walter G. Smith School

The Concordia Group has been working to buy some of the city’s shuttered schools, including Point Breeze’s Walter Smith School and the Vare School in Pennsport. The schools first went up for sale in 2013.

The developer’s plans for Walter Smith include converting the location for residential use. Residents have been resistant of the plans in the past, but a tentative agreement has now been reached with the Point Breeze CDC to begin moving the process forward. This agreement would require the development of the Walter Smith School at 19th and Wharton to include space for the use of the community.

2012 Wharton development receives zoning board approval

In 2013 plans were first presented for a 50 home development at 2012 Wharton St. in Point Breeze. The project then went quiet for a few years, with not much movement beyond the demolition of a large warehouse that stood on the property.

We then fast forward to 2016, when new plans for the project reemerged. This large development has now received the necessary approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment.
