Ugly American is 86’d; Miss Rachel’s rocks

Ugly American at Front and Federal streets has ended its eight-year run, serving up its last Garbage Plate this weekend. Zagat reports that owner Kevin Kelley said it was time to move on.

Kelley owns the bricks and wants to bring in another bar operator, so if you’re interested… Actually, there’s all kinds of opportunity for the budding bar owner. Teri’s on 9th went up for sale, too.

Meanwhile, across South Philly, Phawker checked in at Miss Rachel’s pantry, the ambitious vegetarian spot on West Passyunk. The reviewer found plenty to love, calling the meal “a minor masterpiece.” That was despite his initial nervousness about both the portion sizes and “the ‘Farmhouse Table,’ which consists of 12 strangers at one enormous table.”

Though we knew about this place, it hadn’t really been on our radar, and this is the first review that we can think of. We’re glad they brought it up. Sounds tasty.

Their garbage plates were trash. An insult to Rochester cuisine.
