The Garage bar near Geno’s hoping to open June 1

Tucked inside a post about a new jazz/bar/restaurant coming to Northern Liberties, The Insider buried the lead, as far as South Philly’s concerned, anyway.

The blog reports that Jason Evenchik, the main man behind the Time/Bar/Vintage/Growlers empire, plans to open his long-stalled bar Garage at 1231 E. Passyunk Ave. on June 1.

Windows are blacked out now. There was paper over them just a few weeks ago.

Back in August, we told you that Garage would be coming to cheesesteak central, directly across Passyunk Avenue from Geno’s.

Check this old post for the full scoop, but Klein summed it up well enough for us:

Brilliantly simple concept: Bar with pool table, foosball, jukebox, and dart boards. Only two beers on tap but a huge can list. And the food? He’s installed a food cart to accommodate the culinary bounty of rotating selection of food truck operators, caterers, and out-of-work chefs.

Evenchik told us in February, after we were burned on an opening timeline a second time, that getting building permits was a nightmare. He signed the email:

As you can see from the photo above, it doesn’t look like much from the outside. But Evenchik insisted from the beginning that the interior would only take about a month to build. So, hopefully, that means we’ll be sipping from that massive can list in a matter of weeks.

And in case you’re interested, the NoLibs joint would be a “chef-driven restaurant (pan-European/American menu) with a solid craft beer, wine and whiskey selection” plus jazz, the Insider says. It’s planned for at 914 N. Second St., across from North Bowl.

Meanwhile, it’s a good week for news about restaurant openings. Tiffin Bistro just said they planned to open May 31.
