Vanilya bakery will open next to Passyunk tea room after all

Way back in October, we spotted some activity in the long-vacant former La Piu Bella bridal shop at 1611 E. Passyunk Ave.

After some digging, we figured out the storefront was linked to a woman who ran a bakery in Brooklyn called Vanilya and speculated that she would be opening a shop here. But she said no decisions had been made on what to do with the space.

Lo and behold, she told us this week:

“We have just received approval from the city to move forward with a bakery,” said the owner, who asked that we not use her name because she’s still employed elsewhere. ” The bakery will be called Vanilya and will be specializing in custom wedding and special occasion cakes.”

Don’t you just love it when your guesses turn out to be right?

Construction is to begin in the next few weeks. Expect wedding cakes – appropriate for an old bridal shop, no? – and other special occasion cakes, as well as cupcakes, cookies and gum-paste flowers for the home baker to gussy-up their own creations.

She said she’ll offer more, but those details will emerge after construction has gotten under way.

So, we’re going to put the over-under for grand opening at September 1. Any takers?

I’ll take the over, only because almost nothing ever opens as scheduled on the avenue.

That’s probably a good bet since she didn’t provide a timeline
