Look out, bicyclists. Police are watching (for now)

bike lane metro

Metro reports that the Police Department will be cracking down on bike riders who violate the rules of the road, dispatching 12 more officers around Center City.

Red light-blowers beware: the Philadelphia Police Department, in conjunction with the Mayor’s Office of Transportation and Utilities, on Wednesday announced they’ll be boosting the enforcement of bicycle traffic laws through the month of June.

That means full stops at stop signs, waiting for red to turn green even when no cars are coming (damn), and the things you really shouldn’t do: ride the wrong way on a one way or riding on sidewalks.

Since South Philly has such a high percentage of bike commuters, we figured we’d let you know. Then, after July, the Police Department will go back to ignoring the issue.

If only they’d follow the rules themselves. Constantly see bike officers riding on sidewalks and going the wrong way. They are laws because of endangering yourself and others.

Bicycle safety is important, but I’d rather see a crack down on aggressive drivers who make it scary to commute with my bicycle. It’d also be nice to have better timed lights so bikes don’t have to stop so dang often.

LOL, you have the love the angry biker who runs the stop sign and then gets upset when he has a close encounter with the sideview mirror as you pass him for the second or 3rd time. I laugh. I’m destined to hit one one of these days. Let’s hope not.

I think it’s cyclists who get the most pissed off at the a-hole cyclists who give the rest of us a bad name. I went for a run the other night and turned the corner at Broad and Tasker to head north on Broad just as a sidewalk riding cyclist was heading south. He had to swerve to avoid me while also swerving through the crowd gathered outside of The Dolphin (that place is hopping!) and proceeded to yell back at me, “hey buddy, watch where you’re running!” I wasn’t pissed as much as weirdly admirable of the gumption.

My favorite is when I’m walking on Snyder Avenue and someone is riding their bike on the sidewalk when there is a perfectly good bike lane RIGHT ON SNYDER AVENUE.
