To-Do List: Hot dog cook-off, cool off deliciously & drink beer with your neighbors

dog days

There’s nothing like grilling in the summer, but it’s even better when someone else does it for you.

The South Street Headhouse District and Hot Diggity are throwing a hot dog cookoff from noon to 4 p.m. on the 400 block of South 2nd Street, aka Headhouse Square. Participating restaurants include Hot Diggity!, Brauhaus Schmitz, The Twisted Tail, Bridget Foy’s, Copabanana, Bistro Romano, Marc Vetri’s Alla Spina, Lucky’s Last Chance, Misconduct Tavern, La Calaca Feliz, and Chefs Aaron Gottesman and Jen Carroll for Border Springs Lamb Farm.

There will also be a toppings contest, beer tents and live music from a seven-piece funk ensemble. Pay as you go.

East Passyunk Civic Association is hosting a meet and greet at Fountain Porter, 10th and Tasker, from 3 to 6 p.m. There will be beer and food specials all night. It’s a good way to meet your neighbors and a good time to check out Fountain Porter, in case you haven’t already. $5 donation goes toward EPX’s neighborhood improvement efforts.

All Summer Long

It’s not going to be as sweltering this weekend, so it’s again OK to go outside. But it’s still summer, so cool off with a tour of tasty frozen treats. Uwishunu compiled their list of favorite frozen-treat spots around town, and several South Philly entries are on the list, including John’s and Pop’s water ice shops, plus Capogiro and the new Lil Pop Shop on South Street. Check out the whole list here.
