A new craft beer bar called Madira Bar and Grill is shooting to open next month at 21st and Titan.
The bar, at 1252 S 21st St., is opening in the corner spot that used to be the 1252 Crab House. Manager Gary Patel, a huge craft beer fan, says that the bar will have 18 beers on tap and another 250 to 300 brews available for takeout by the sixpack. Growlers and refills will also be available.
Patel, whose father owns the Federal Beer distributor at 15th and Federal, says the venture was planned long before a winning Powerball ticket was sold at the beer store in June.
For the food, Patel says that the menu will consist mainly of standard bar fare like burgers and sandwiches, plus a couple items that draw from his Indian heritage. His background also informs the choice of the name Madira, which is a term related to the type of wine Hindu kings drank for centuries. It has the same derivation as the word “mead” and undoubtedly is related to madeira, a fortified Portuguese wine.
The bar will be two floors, with the takeout coolers and seating for about 25 on the first floor and another 30 on the second, Patel said. He expects to open sometime next month. Liquor license, which came with the sale of the building, has already been transferred and work is nearly complete, he said.
That area is really popping. Madira will be only a couple blocks away from whatever bar is taking over the old Munson Manor at 20th and Federal and just a block from a new office/day care project at Wharton Street and Point Breeze Avenue.
