Freeze your ass off for fun on a South Philly Christmas lights bike tour

The Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia is hosting a cool event next week  – OK, more cold than cool, possibly even freezing. The coalition is leading a seven-mile bike tour of South Philly Christmas lights next Thursday, Dec. 19.

Says Newsworks:

“Last year was the first time we tried something like this. It was a huge success. We had more than 100 people come out,” said [Nicholas Mirra, the coalition’s communications coordinator]. “We had many people decorate their bikes with lights, wore lights on their bodies. One person towed a Christmas tree on a little flat platform that he built for the back of his bike. So the bike ride itself was an entertaining site in addition to the lights we checked out.”

The tour was originally scheduled for tonight, but the potential for icy conditions forced the coalition to postpone it.

Bikers will gather at Performance Bicycle at 1300 S. Columbus Blvd. at 5:30 p.m. The tour will take about 90 minutes and end at Cavanaugh’s in Headhouse Square, 421 S. 2nd St for an after-party from 7 to 9 p.m. It costs $10 at the door and includes two drinks and free appetizers in a private room upstairs.
