Rumor Mill: Tenant secured for Wharton Street Lofts, and sorry, it’s not a Trader Joe’s

Want us to get to the bottom of a rumor? Email us at and we’ll check it out.

Rumors have been swirling for months that the retail tenant coming to the Wharton Street Lofts, which just started leasing at 12th and Wharton, was going to be a Trader Joe’s.

Sorry, no dice.

The tenant they are working with is a 24-hour gym, says developer Leo Addimando. It’s a national chain but he won’t disclose the name until the deal is signed.

He said that tenants of the building will get drastically reduced membership fees.

The Trader Joe’s rumor, which has been pervasive, was fueled by hope as much as anything else. But we were thinking that maybe it was a whisper down the lane situation and that it was actually going to be the location for the South Philly Food Co-op. They’ve been shopping around, and the timelines kind of match up. Alas, no.

Have to say this is a bit disappointing. With Sweat so close by, another gym does not jump to the forefront as something the neighborhood could use. I would have preferred a retail use for this space – close to the park, near the Ave., walking distance of lots of residential – its a corner that was made for food-based retail like a Trader Joe’s.

I agree with @jared. A gym doesn’t really strike me as particularly needed. There is sweat, there is fitnessworks. This new gym better be really nice, really inexpensive, or offer something else to grab new members. That its a national chain WILL help though.

That said, I’m a little disappointed thats what came up.

Obviously a Trader Joe’s would have been awesome – but I’m not disappointed with a new gym. Sweat is extremely overpriced compared to gyms in other parts of the city. And I love Fitness Works but it is also overpriced, imo. This should offer some healthy competition.

I like the idea… I like a 24 hour gym. But I hope its not over priced… And I hope its a real gym… Not that fake brand of a gym facility that Planet Fitness feels so proud about.. It will be interesting to see if they can make something that’s better than all the rest while also making it less expensive than what is out there now…
