Nail salon – not nightlife anchor – coming to southern end of Italian Market

Consider our hopes dashed.

The new business sandwiched between Connie’s Ric Rac and Teri’s bar – which we wished aloud that it could provide the third link to a nightlife anchor on the southern end of the Italian Market – will be a nail salon. Damn.

The nail salon is on the right, next to Connie's Ric Rac.

The storefront at 1128 S. 9th St. that previously housed a medical uniform store called MIA Scrubs is being renovated for a nail salon, according to a worker who came to the door last week. A permit on the door says “personal services” are now allowed.

There’s still hope. That empty lot across the street is still slated for redevelopment, which would include about 32,000 square feet of retail space if owner Midwood Investment and Development stops taking their sweet time. We’re starting to think they’re just speculating. Who would want to build only one story there anyway?

For a much more modest retail space, there’s also a building for sale right next to the lot.

But what about this whole premise of this being a good location for a couple decent late-night places? Are we beating a dead horse?
