Chhaya cafe moving to much bigger digs just two doors away

Chhaya, the coffee/breakfast spot at 1823 E. Passyunk Ave., is moving into the former Sweet Alyssa, a children’s clothing store that moved out last month.

Out of the old (current, actually)...
Out of the old (current, actually)…

An employee at the shop told us yesterday that they’re shooting to open in the new space sometime in May. We hear that the move will coincide with an expansion of the menu. Fitting, since the new space is more than twice the size of the current location.

...and into the new.
…and into the new.

Details on the new menu haven’t been finalized.

The current 1,900 square foot building was sold in December for $418,800, according to Zillow. Not sure what the new owner’s plans are.

The move is another positive step in the trend of little Passyunk businesses being successful enough to make the leap into bigger spaces – a la Fond’s move to the fountain and Era Atomica’s move to the three-story building (potentially including a tattoo shop) on the 1800 block.

And if you’re worried about Sweet Alyssa, which has been in several locations around the avenue since 1982, don’t be. They popped up just across the street.

Congrats Chhaya! A much better use of that large space.
