Get your checkbook ready: PSCA 2014 Art Auction kicks off March 28

Love art? The Passyunk Square Civic Association is hosting its 2014 Art Auction  next month, featuring local talents such as famed photographer Zoe Strauss, octopus-loving Adam Wallacavage, print-maker Jim Houser, food illustrator Hawk Krall and more.

PSCA President Pam Zenzola said they want to focus on promoting local talent and art in an area, so all featured artists are from South Philly. In addition, there will also be a raffle for tickets to Theatre Exile, at 13th and Reed, and gift certificates to local restaurants and dance studios.

Zenzola sees the auction as a way of bringing residents together and engaging them. She also encourages contributing artists to attend the auction, especially to answer questions about their inspiration behind their works.

“I want to see faces,” she said. “Knowing neighbors is so important. That builds a stronger neighborhood.”

Elaine Johnson at Frame Fatale, 1813 E Passyunk Ave., is in charge of rounding up artists for the auction. She believes the community has become more artistic and hopes the auction will continue to benefit all residents as well as the PSCA.

“All the money raised will benefit the community,” she said.

And what’s an event around here without refreshments? Local vendors will supply food and drink to quench thirst and sate appetites for a long day of buying art.  The PSCA is still working on rounding up local businesses to sell yum yums at the auction, so if you’re interested, contact Zenzola at

The auction will take place March 28 from 7 to 10 p.m. at Annunciation BVM Church, 10th and Dicksonson. Tickets are $10, which you can buy via PayPal here. If you have art you want to donate, click here.
