A fire that appears to have begun in one of the apartments above Hawthorne’s cafe and beer takeout at 11th and Fitzwater severely damaged the building and sent water cascading into the restaurant.

The fire started about 7 a.m., and eight people have been displaced, according to the Red Cross. No one was injured.

It’s too early to determine what caused the blaze, but Deputy Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer told CBS3 that Hawthorne’s incurred only water damage, meaning the fire started in an apartment above. The blaze spread through the roof and was not under control until about 9:15 a.m.

“It was a little bit challenging that they had multiple roofs from the property that they renovated, so it wasn’t just one roof that made it difficult to get to the fire in the roof initially,” Sawyer explained.

So glad no one was hurt, so heartbroken about Hawthornes. That place is a real treasure, and I hope Chris and Heather are able to get the place back on its feet soon.

I love the picture of all the hipsters huddled in the cold wondering where they are going to have brunch on Sunday.

Seriously though, glad no one was injured and it seems like Hawthorne’s will be back.

Hipsters? Where? Seriously Ray, did you make yourself chuckle with that one?

Hipsters? All of the people in that people are Hawthornes team members. From the executive chef in the green and brown stripe shirt to the beer manger in a gray hoodie and black sweat pants.

Some knucklehead graffiti’ed the windows of Hawthorne’s. 🙁 Wonder how they are doing, and if the building is salvageable.
