Work has begun on boutique hotel, restaurant space at 5th and Bainbridge

Although it doesn’t look like it on the outside, work has begun on development of the corner of Bainbridge and 5th into a boutique hotel, restaurant, five residential apartments and a variety of small retail spaces.

After a flurry of activity when the property was sold, with long-term businesses shuttering or moving to other locations, the corner has remained empty and dormant. Then after a sign was placed in the window recently touting the hotel, the neighborhood buzzed with curiosity and, depending who you talk to, mixed emotions, questions, excitement or disappointment.

According to the South Philly Review, ground has been broken on the Kater Street side of the property. If you peek inside the dirty windows you can see the insides have been cleared of debris and have been gutted.

Developer Ilan Zaken has proposed 28 to 30 rooms in the hotel with a plan to adapt and refurbish the existing structures. Look for the hotel with a projected opening of spring 2015.

Steve Jeffries of Precision Realty Group, who is charged with filling the new spaces, said he has been in discussions with restaurateurs from Philly and other cities to fill the proposed 3,200 square foot space. There are also opportunities for boutique retail space from 700 to 3,000 square feet.

Jeffries said they plan to curate potential tenants to make it an attractive destination for the neighborhood. Non-bong shop proprietors with an interest in the available spaces should contact Jeffries for more information at
