Another new business proposed for Snyder as the avenue heats up

A storefront at 1205 Snyder Ave., the former Moskow Draperies shop, is set to become a hair salon.

A use permit was filed with the city this week for “a hair salon (personal services) on the first floor” with a two-family dwelling on the floors above, according to city records.

Moskow closed in January 2013 after more than 100 years at that location, 45 years under the same management. The building was sold the month before the business closed for the bargain-basement price of $108,000, city records show. Place must have needed a ton of work (unless that is somehow a mistake).

Despite closing its location, the curtain business is still operating. So, if you’re in the market for drapes, curtains or blinds, call 215-468-6868.

In the meantime, keep an eye out for any activity there. We haven’t been able to connect with the business owner, so that’s all the information we have about this place so far.

Just across the street, though, work has begun on the beer distributor in the old Superior Plumbing Supply building.

Workers were clamoring away inside this week.

And Landmark Architecture is finishing up the exterior improvements to its building at Snyder and Juniper.

Landmark Architecture
Much better than what it looked like before.

And the most pressing of all is the proposed Thai takeout joint for 13th and Snyder. That proposal is up for a zoning committee meeting before the Lower Moyamensing Civic Association on Monday night. So, if you want Thai food at that corner, go to the Fumo Family Library at Broad and Porter on March 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Home of future Thai delights?
Home of future Thai delights? It’s kind of up to you.

How could this happen?!?!?!? A beer distributor?!?!?!? Get it out!!! Its garbage!!! Its going to KILL KILL KILL the block!!! WHY IS THIS EVEN ALOWED TO HAPPEN!?!?! NO LOW CLASS SCUM BAG BEER DISTRIBUTORS!!! South Philly has enough of them already!!!!

…So much for the LoMo Civic Association… What a joke that outfit is…

Do we know who the beer distributor is that will operate this establishment?

      • March 14, 2014 at 9:32 am

Not yet. The liquor app says Golden Coast, but that doesn’t necessarily mean anything. I know the civics have had contact with the owners to at least encourage something nicer.

What a disgrace… Beer distributors and a slop takeout joint… Get real LoMo… You’re looking really ghetto these days…

I’m all for the beer distributor, The closest one is what, 6th & Morris? That’s way to far to schelp a case of beer. A cool beer distributor will cater to the younger homeowners and help grow the neighborhood. The Joey-bag-o-donuts types have let this place go downhill.

    • March 14, 2014 at 12:10 pm

Front and Snyder has a beer distributor… 7th and Snyder has a beer distributor… So does 16th and Passyunk… Look at both of these places… Would you want that on your block? What a disgrace…

And then we’ll have the slop takeout joint on 13th and Snyder… Thats another shame… All that work they did to remove the ugly brown paint and expose the beautiful red bricks… And they’re just gonna recklessly bring in some stink in slop food shack of a business that should probably be operating out of a lunch truck. Think I’m being negative? You bet I am.. Check out the corner of 12th and Snyder to see why…

      LoMo… Get your act together!!!

Dude, we get it, you don’t like Thai food. You can stop calling it “slop”. Thai restaurants are no less reputable than some nondescript pizza joint, or a taco shop, or whatever else.

  • March 15, 2014 at 9:02 pm

Its not a Thai restaurant… Its a Thai take out joint… I love the Ribs from Nick’s Charcoal Pit next door.. But that place looks like slop too… Cheap signage and trash cans.. Come on man… Yeah a nondescript pizza joint WOULD suck… It certainly would…

Even if we don’t eat there or like the food, we should still demand that the establishment is classy and represents the neighborhood in way that is emblematic of the outstanding recovery that has been going on…
Please don’t mistake my meaning.. It could be all vegan food for all I care.. I’d still want it to not look like a dump. And all the beer distributors and ramshackle take out places that have opened on Snyder Ave, tend to look like dumps!

    The avenue deserves better..

At least the hair salon proposed to replace A. Moscow might put Reputations Hair salon out of business! That would be great! That guy is the meanest business owner in South Philly!
