Spotted: This is not spring cleaning

For the last time, people, sweeping litter from the curb or sidewalk to the gutter is not a solution to the litter problem.

Litter 12th and McKean

This one is at 12th and McKean, but it’s hardly unique. You took the time to sweep, just please take another two minutes to get a dust pan and put that detritus into a trash bag.

One thing to note, when we posted this picture on Twitter the other day, someone said they’d seen this pile for a while. For the record, we saw some fresh sweep marks in the surrounding dirt and recently added trash on top, so it’s one of those piling-on kind of situations.

But now that we’re on the subject, the citywide Philly Spring Cleanup is on April 5. Check here for some information.

Maybe these old timers are used to the days when we had street sweepers coming through who might have picked this up. But, oh yeah, they complained about having to move their cars every other week, so we don’t get the street cleaning.

So now they have to pick it up, but that’s too much to ask it seems.

Between this and watching people take garbage bags to the full compactors/ overflowing normal trashcans – it drives me crazy. Is it so difficult to be clean?

it’s the filthiest “nice” neighborhood in the city. disappointing.

We have the same problem in the Grad Hospital area! My boyfriend and I spent at least an hour over the weekend cleaning off our sidewalk and also parts Bouvier Street using our two hands and a dustpan. It wasn’t hard and we were able to introduce ourselves to the friendlier neighbors. Nothing is more frustrating after all that hard work than to come home to a dirty street similar to the picture above. Something needs to change in this part of the City.

nothing beats the lukoil on 11th and snyder. apparently when people are too lazy to put their trash out on time they just take it here to dump outside their trash container. there’s even some nice looking steel oil drums just hanging out near their sidewalk. this place is continually filthy, they never pick up any of the trash that gets thrown on their property which just encourages more people to add to it. maybe passyunk post can do an expose’ on them. and help pressure them to be more proactive about keeping their property clean by providing some trash receptacles or to not allow dumping of trash (or to clean it up promptly when people do dump their trash there) I live on cantrell and have called 311 on them a number of times, but it’s still a mess, and all that trash just ends up blowing down cantrell or back to 11th.

please continue to call people out on this type of behavior. especially businesses like this lukoil, if they are pressured to do something about it maybe it will help clean up more of streets.

I wish we could replace the street sweepers with those green machine guys who clean up the center city district… If people not wanting to move their cars really is the reason why the street sweepers don’t come anymore.. Well.. I could understand that… If you work nights at a restaurant or bar and don’t get in till 3 or 4 am… And you are lucky enough to find a spot where the parking terrorists (PPA) won’t ticket or tow you.. Throwing in a curve ball day where you can’t even park on a certain side of the street makes it difficult.. And if you say its not difficult, more power to ya.. But its still very very annoying..

Center City’s Green Machine guys do it right.. Broad Street looks great right after the Mummers Parade… And thats a huge trash bomb.. Regular trash buildup should be no problem if we could find a way to get a service like that…

Ideas anyone on how to pay for such services???

I did see a green machine (although white, not green) vacuuming trash on McKean between 11th & 12th on my way to work this week. I assumed they only worked on Passyunk and around the fountain, but it would be great if they cleaned the surrounding streets more regularly.

I think PARC has one or two; when the weather is nice you’ll see them out cleaning up in the neighborhood.
