Whitman Council will oppose the move of scrap metal shop to behind Ikea

F&J Scrap recently packed up their shop located just north of Target at 1701 S. Water St. A sign hung on the side yard of the business stated that it would be moving to an unknown location on Weccacoe Avenue in Whitman. That’s the stretch of road behind Ikea and home to John’s Roast Pork.

Richard Lazer, vice president of Whitman Council, made it clear last week that the neighborhood will be opposing such a move.

“We’re fighting it,” said Lazer. “We’re against them coming to Whitman [and] trying to do the best we can to promote development.” That’s quite clear with all of the recent action on Swanson Street.

While L&I had their own issues with the scrap joint, it was a big headache for the surrounding neighborhood as well – mainly in the form of scrap litter, abandoned shopping carts and transient pickers who may or may not have resided underneath I-95.

The sign mentioned a date of July 1 for some sort of move to Weccacoe Avenue. As for now, we’ll certainly keep an eye on it to see how it plays out.
